Purpose Driven Teaching Surface-Deep-Transfer
PURPOSE DRIVEN TEACHING
- Developing GRE4T Learners through classroom instruction.
- Promoting engagement through all stages of learning: Surface, Deep, and Transfer
GAUGE their current level of understanding
How do you elicit student learning evidence before instruction to determine the best starting point?
READINESS to know where they are going and are confident to take on the challenge
How do you determine if students are being properly challenged?
ADAPT tools to guide their learning
How are students provided opportunities to determine the path they use for learning or to demonstrate mastery?
DETERMINE feedback, and recognize that errors are opportunities to learn
What do you do to promote a classroom culture that views error as a necessary path to learning and growth?
EVALUATE their progress, and adjust their learning
How often do your students self-assess to determine their next learning steps against success criteria?
Be SUCCESSFUL in recognizing their learning, and teach others
What do you currently do to promote ways for students to teach others?
SURFACE
Learning starts at the surface level, which is not superficial but rather focuses on essential foundational concepts and introductory skills. Surface learning can be seen as “knowing that”—the fundamental knowledge students need to acquire first.
DEEP
With intentional experiences, learning moves from surface to deep. Deep learning requires that students see the connections between and among the concepts and skills they are learning. Another way of thinking about deep learning is “knowing how”—how to use the knowledge.
TRANSFER
And, with different experiences, learning can move to the transfer level, which is really the goal of our collective efforts. At the transfer level, students can use the concepts and skills on their own in a range of new experiences. At this phase, the focus is on “knowing with.”
